What is MTS all about?

Royal Holloway Musical Theatre Society (known as MTS) is one of the largest and most active societies on campus, staging musical spectaculars throughout the year. Whether you’re a keen singer, dancer, actor, director, producer, choreographer, musical director, stage manager, or just an enthusiast, MTS has a place for everyone.

In a normal year, we work all year round to stage full-scale performances, concerts, showcases, workshops, theatre trips and of course many socials. This year will be slightly different but we still have plenty of amazing opportunities for you to get involved with!

We put on 2 auditioned productions in term 1 and term 2. Each term features one Main Term Production which, in the past, have included both classic and contemporary musicals such as Chicago, Legally Blonde, and The Addams Family. These main productions would normally be performed in November and March every year in venues such as the Student's Union of Royal Holloway and Medicine. Alongside our Main Term Production in Term 1 we perform our MTS Mini Production, giving a platform for a smaller-cast and perhaps lesser-well known show. In Term 2 we hold  ‘Variations’ - the original first-year musical which in previous years has included Bake Off the Musical, Love Island the Musical, The Hunger Games: The Musical and Not Another High School Musical. This is the opportunity for our freshers to show us what they can do!

Throughout the year, we also hold a number of Lights Up events, which is a series of non-auditioned showcases for people to show off their skills be it dancing, singing or acting. These will be every term, and a great opportunity for our members to practice in front of an audience.

This year, we are also super excited to introduce a new set of workshops specialising in all aspects of Musical Theatre! We will be offering classes in different Musical Theatre skills, audition preparation and general Musical Theatre knowledge several times a week so there are plenty of opportunities for you to develop your skills!

Although the current situation will have an impact on our usual events calendar, we are still planning to stage an auditioned showcase in term 1 (whether that be face to face or virtual) as well as continuing our Lights Up series. We will also be hosting a range of workshops and socials so there will still be a lot for our members to get involved with!

MTS is a society that bases its values on inclusivity. We believe strongly in uniting people regardless of their background, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity or age by coming together and sharing our love and passion for theatre.
