Royal Holloway Musical Theatre Society’s annual Weekend Show took place on January 29th, 2017 and was a triumphant affair, that saw a record turnout and a phenomenal standard of singing, acting and dancing, all accompanied by a highly accomplished live band that was acoustically perfect for Jane Holloway Hall.
The highly appealing theme of the weekend was Musicals of the 21st Century, and the fresh and vibrant song list included numbers from hit modern shows such as Hamilton, Hairspray, The Bodyguard, In The Heights and Legally Blonde. The eager cast threw themselves heartily into every challenge the creative team gave them, which is why despite the rehearsal process was so vigorous (just 48 hours to put on a show of such calibre), it was so greatly enjoyed by all. The show was also fortunate enough to benefit from fantastic preview performances from MTS’ two upcoming Spring Term productions, Marvel vs. DC and Spring Awakening, as well as four stunning solos from dedicated members of the society, all of which were greatly received by the appreciative audience. Other exciting additions to this year’s Weekend Show were the first use of the new Jane Holloway staging thanks to the tireless work of two of our sabbatical officers who helped us build it, and the dimming of house lighting to induce a more authentic performance experience.
The sheer volume of fellow students who turned out to support their fellow peers in the performance speaks volumes for the value of Weekend Show amongst the Royal Holloway community, as does the number of people who were in the show itself, a truly staggering number and one the committee are truly proud of. The cast’s great respect for the creative team was also a joy to behold, and we look forward to building upon the success of this year’s Weekend Show in the coming months.

Some of our cast members and creative team enjoying some much-deserved celebration in Crosslands after the show!
